چکیده

Ethylene is readily produced aerobically from oc-keto-ymethylthiobutyric acid as well as from fl-methylthiopropionaldehyde (methional) by peroxidase in the presence of Mn2+, SOa2-, and phenol. Tracer studies indicate that carbons 1, 2, 3 plus 4, and the methyl carbon of oc-keto-y-methylthiobutyric acid gives rise to carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide, ethylene, and methyldisulfide, respectively. Carbons 1, 2 plus 3, and the methyl carbon of methional give rise to formic acid, ethylene, and methyldisulfide, respectively. A chemical mechanism accounting for the production of these products is described in which the peroxidase functions as lelectron oxidizing agent.

Precursors of ethylene.

Two pathways for biosynthesis of ethylene in higher plants have been postulated (10). One is associated with the breakdown of peroxidized linolenic acid and the other involves the degradation of methionine. Although the formation of ethyilene from peroxidized linolenate has been demonstrated in model systems catalyzed by Cu24, oxygen and ascorbic acid (10) and by an apple extract in the presenc...

Inactivity of apoperoxidase in indoleacetic acid oxidation and in ethylene formation.

Peroxidase catalyzes oxidatic reactions (in which oxygen is the electron acceptor) as well as the classic peroxidatic reactions (in which hydrogen peroxide is the electron acceptor) (4, 10). There is considerable evidence that the enzyme which catalyzes the oxidatic degradation of the plant growth hormone, indole-3acetic acid, is a peroxidase (8). Recently Yang (12, 13) and Ku et al. (5) have d...

Ethylene formation by polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Role of myeloperoxidase

Ethylene formation from the thioethers, beta-methylthiopropionaldehyde (methional) and 2-keto-4-thiomethylbutyric acid by phagocytosing polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) was found to be largely dependent on myeloperoxidase (MPO). Conversion was less than 10% of normal when MPO-deficient PMNs were employed; formation by normal PMNs was inhibited by the peroxidase inhibitors, azide, and cyanide...

Ethylene biosynthesis in fruit tissues.

Tracer studies with avocado tissues indicate that methionine is converted to ethylene at stages of the climacteric rise and the climacteric peak, but not at the preclimacteric stage. The results suggest that the control of ethylene biosynthesis is at a step after methionine is synthesized. The endogenous content of methionine was found to be so low that methionine must be actively turned over f...

Ethylene biosynthesis in Botrytis cinerea.

Ethylene is often released during plant pathogenesis. Enhanced ethylene biosynthesis by the attacked plant, and formation of ethylene by the attacking pathogen may be involved. We defined the biosynthetic pathway of ethylene in the pathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea, and characterized the conditions that affect ethylene production in vitro. During the first 48 h of culture the fungus uses methi...
